As you can see, only after a year living here our carpet has become yucky. This is a problem mostly only in the area by the front door. We tried having a mat down, but it always got caught in the door, so as you can see in the picture, it is less than helpful.
Now Donnie and I both have our own opinion about what should be done. He says rent a carpet cleaner every once in a while and clean it.I say, rip it out! Our house was built in the 50's so there is a chance that there are hardwood floors under it. Now we don't have the money to put in hardwood floors, so they would have to be there already. I need to rip up a corner and see.
So what is your vote? Rip it out, or rent a carpet cleaner?

We use Spot Shot carpet cleaner from Home Depo and is works really well. Especially on pet stains!

I would use a carpet cleaner and then maybe put one of those runner rugs there the ones that have the little plastic spikes on the back I think they are more for out door but then it will not move with the door and should not get caught on the door either.
If you know for a fact that there are hardwood floors.....DO IT! ;)
